Let’s move back in time.

 Get Moving!

What happened to the days where kick ball was being played in the cul-de-sac, a game of baseball in an open field behind Ms Courtney’s house, and our parents having to drag our butts inside just so we could eat dinner? Things aren’t like that anymore! We need to get moving! We need to get outside and explore this beautiful world that we live in.

According to the CDC the childhood obesity rate have more than doubled in the past 30 years and has tripled for adolescents. (Childhood is defined as ages 6-11 adolescent is defined as 12-19)

TRIPLED!

This is just getting ridiculous.

We need to be thankful that we can walk and run, laugh and play.

I have 10 challenges for everyone!
1.       Go on a family walk. Everyday. For 30minutes.
2.       Drink 8 glasses of water a day
3.       Put your shoes and socks on while standing up. Balance!
4.       Park in the furthest parking spot
5.       Only watch tv or be on the internet 30 minutes a day.
6.       Try a new outside activity once a week. (Hike, rock climb, bike, canoe, paddleboard, soccer, sand volleyball etc.)
7.       Set fitness and lifestyle goals both short and long term. For example I will run 3 times week and in 3 month I will do a 5k. I am going to give up soda for 1 month and see how it feels! By the end of this year I will have hiked 15 different locations. Write them up and put them somewhere you can see every day.  Hold yourself accountable
8.       Take the stairs. Every time! Even if it’s the 10th floor feel those glutes burn.
9.       Go bowling or mini golfing instead of the movies. You can burn at least 200 calories for an hours’ worth of fun!!
10.   Plan a game of Frisbee with your friends at the park for this weekend.

The goal is to get moving and to get active, to laugh with family and friends, and to get some fresh air. You’ll start reaping the benefits in no time.

Remember to be thankful for what we have. We never know how long where going to have it.

Have a great day!

Sincerely,

Leslie Faust

Weekend Recap 8/24

Weekend Recap

We really enjoyed getting out this weekend and seeing our players on the court as well as meeting some new awesome families.

-Brookwood Tournament-
The decor of the tournament and set up was wonderful. You could see that the parents, coaches and players put a lot of effort into the day and Jackie and I loved attending. Great Job BHS! Also, there was nothing better then seeing all our girls and families from all 3 BHS teams helping around the courts! From check-in to selling Chick-fil-a to keeping score, AEVC families were in full action all with welcoming smiles on their faces! Love visiting BHS! BHS Alumni, Coach Amy would have been very proud.

Brookwood- Blair again dominated on the right side as the other defense could not pass the ball. Kelly again led the defense on the right side both in skill and senior leadership. We are missing Kendall very much as she is still out with a concussion! Get well soon Kendall!

Grayson- Although there were some tough games there was no stopping our Atlanta Extreme players! Abbey led the defense and is a freshman! Abbie and Chandler worked great as a combo to rack up points on the other team. It was easy to see that these two worked hard at club and had built a bond that is unstoppable!

Mountain View- Stronger defender, Aysha, was playing as libero and had some amazing passes as the other team found it hard to get anything past her no matter how hard they hit or where they placed it. Gabrielle worked hard to make sure to set the perfect sets to her teammates which ended with some nice kills and nice wins. It was also great to see the AEVC families and  AEVC alumni and AEVC Alumni Rep, Bre, in the audience cheering on her sister!

PCA- The heart and desire from setter, Casey, and libero, Carly, are undeniable and shows in everything they do. Casey was all over the court setting up great sets to her hitters as she has wonderful hands and also strong leadership and Carly made sure the offense knew she was always waiting for their ball!

GWA- Senior, Hannah, continues to show improvement just when you think she couldn't work any harder, she does. Her quick feet were able to get her under the ball to help set up great balls for her offense!

-Northview-
It is always sweet to go back to my Alma Mater to watch our girls play. It feels like yesterday until I realize our next reunion is already coming up! Wow!

Peachtree Ridge - Missing a few players, you could see that they team was down. After a tough loss and a fire speech from Coach Jackie and I, they team had a huge turn around and took the top NHS team to 3 games! I can just tell this team will only get stronger from hear on out!

NHS JV- Although we did not get to watch them, we need to give a huge Congrats to the NHS JV team that took home the championship this weekend! Way to go Milandi, Iris and Amarah! Cant wait to come watch you all soon.

-SSA-
This is always a fun tournament to attend as the talent level is always high! Coach Leslie had a great time getting out to watch Hebron as well as some other teams that ask we come out!

Hebron- Great job to our Hebron girls that certainly stood out from the rest: Alli, Ashleigh, AK, Bridgette, Courtney & Sarah!  WAY TO GO GIRLS!

-Mill Creek Fresh-
Coach Allison and Coach JM had a great time getting out to watch the freshman teams! It is so great to see what the future holds for our volleyball community!

-Druid Hills-
AEVC South was out in full force this weekend watching a list of potential players that emailed us. Even-though we are still on wait list for our coaches to come out, please continue to email us as we are able to see a lot of players per week!

Have a great week!

Keep it simple - Food is fuel

If you’re looking for a quick fix, the latest trick, or the next eating fad, you’ve come to the wrong blog. But if you’re looking to change the way you look at food, to use food as fuel for your body, to feel better, look better and perform better, you’re right where you need to be!

That sounds pretty good doesn’t it? Look good, feel good, and perform well. WOW!

I’m not going to lie; the first few weeks may be hard, that’s normal. Your body is adjusting to something new! Your body also has to adjust from the addictive elements in junk food, a topic for a later discussion.

The best advice for me to give you on eating healthy is to keep it simple. When you go to the grocery store you should shop in the produce section, then the meat and seafood counters, then go to dairy and eggs. After this you may pick up some rice, beans or oatmeal but other than those items. There’s no need to go to any other aisles! Keep it simple. Why not the center isles? Because you don’t need anything from them, the foods in those aisles are simply empty calories. By that I mean they have nothing nutritionally valuable: no good vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, or complex carbs.

I want you to go into your pantry and take out that can of chicken noodle soup, or box of cereal. Take a look at the ingredients list. Does it sounds like a lab experiment or is it all ingredients you know and can find on a farm. (Remember keep it simple) If it sounds like a science text book, go ahead and throw that in the trash. While you’re at it go ahead and toss the Oreos as well.

Now don’t think that I eat perfect every day, to be honest I don’t. But I would say 90 percent of the time I do. And then when I do treat myself I don’t feel guilty.

You’re not going to ever be perfect no one is. So don’t have a pity party when you cave in and eat some fried chicken or a slice of pizza. Please allow yourself some room to get frozen yogurt with your kids once in a while. I have learned if you give yourself some wiggle room it’s easier to stick with it.

Keeping it simple is one easy trick to start on your path to eating healthy. I challenge you to look at every single ingredient of everything you eat this week. I know that sounds so tedious but I promise you once you start realizing what is going into your body you will want to keep it simple.

“It's not about perfect. It's about effort. And when you bring that effort every single day, that's where transformation happens. That's how change occurs.”

― Jillian Michaels

HS Week Recap 8/12 - 8/18

Hebron vs. Buford

For our first 2013 High School Season- Coach Jackie and I stopped at Hebron to watch them take on Buford!

Hebron got off to a quick 13-0 lead as Courtney's serve seemed to frazzle Buford. Great defense by Sarah helped the team keep the lead the whole game. Buford could not seem to get a break as OH's Bridgette and Ashleigh continued the pounding throughout the night. Setter Anna Katherine and Alli proved to be a deadly combination as Alli earned a point 90% of her swings! With two sets to none, Hebron was ready for the close. Buford's Corbin was not! Due to amazing serving and a HUGE dig on the line by Corbin, Buford was able to come back and win the third in a tight race. The 4th game could have gone either way but consistant and strong serving from Hebron and the fact that Corbin was not in the backrow every rotation, Hebron got the win.

Great Job Girls!

Have a great day!

Lauren Sands

Atlanta Extreme Goes South!

Same great training!

We are so excited to announce that starting this Fall, we will be opening an Atlanta Extreme Volleyball Club South!

After many years of success and demand from that area, we decided this was the best time to do this to make it a successful program. Atlanta Extreme South will be run by Kami Fongbemi who has been with AEVC for 4 years now. He has been active in all levels of volleyball for over 20 years! We know that with the continued support from AEVC, he and his coaches will work hard to make sure this first season is VERY successful! We plan to host a minimum of  5 teams that will age from 11-18.

We are very excited for this venture! So please pass this along to any of your family and friends that might be in the Dekalb/Decatur area!

Make sure to visit our AEVCS website: www.AEVCS.org.

Wishing you all a WONDERFUL weekend!

GO EXTREME!!!!

Sincerely,

Lauren Sands

If Fear Can’t Stop You, Nothing Will.

[Why exercise?]

The ball rolls and hits your feet, you pick it up and walk back to the back line. You can feel your heart trying to catch up with your breath. Scores 16-15, game three. Ball in your hands, you have all the power, the pressure is on. The referee blows his whistle. Dribble 1, 2, 3, 4. Spin the ball between your fingers once. You look up at the other side of the court. You see the libero shifting her weight back and forth. You close your eyes and take a deep breath. Toss the ball up thinking deep zone one. You put everything you have into that serve, the ball floats over the top of the net, landing exactly on that end line. IN! ACE! Everyone rushes onto the court flooding you with emotion. You did it. All the hard work, all the sweat and tears. For this exact moment. Nothing can ever take that away from you. Ever. That’s your power. That’s your strength. That moment can take you anywhere you want it to.

Nothing is more empowering than doing something you never thought you could do. Challenging yourself, putting in the work. Then on game day winning the game. You feel unstoppable. Feeling that way will give you confidence. Gaining confidence will make you a stronger person mentally and physically.

Every season I tell my players that if I can teach them, not to be afraid of defeat, but to use that fear to fuel them to be a better player, I have done my job. Yes, I did just get aced 5 times in a row, but when they serve that ball the 6th time. I’m not going to stand back scared. I’m going to take a step forward and say try to do it again. I’m going to look that fear of defeat in the eye and say I’m not afraid. I’m better than you. That lesson can be applied everywhere and anywhere, in sports, in life, and in work. There will be times in your life where you can either run and hide or face it head on. I hope every time, you face it.

One of my favorite quotes sums it up quite nicely.
“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.’ You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
― Eleanor Roosevelt

So how does this relate to exercise??

Because you can challenge yourself through exercise.

Once you learn to do that. It’s not going to be a chore to exercise its going to be something you WANT to do.

So maybe you've never been able to run a mile without stopping, Challenge yourself that in 5 weeks you will do it without walking, that you’ll train 3 days a week.   Here’s a schedule that you can follow.

Please spend 5-10 minutes warming up and stretching and 5 minutes cooling down and stretching.

8 Helpful Study Tips

Hi All,

As school starts up I want to bring up 8 Helpful Study Tips for Students of all ages.

 1. Study Alone - it is best to either study alone or maybe pick one person that you can go back and forth quizzing each other. Three or more becomes a crowd.

2. Use Flash Card - re-writing all your notes will help with memory. This is also very good  for visual learners as sometimes you can remember the answer from just remembering the card.

3. Do your "last chance study" TWICE - many times you have the best "last chance study" and wish you would have studied one more day. Now don't wish make it an expectation! Set your study deadline for a few days before then take a day break and come back to it. You will be amazed on how much will stick!

4. Schedule it - That's right! PEN IT IN! There is no erasing or booking anything else in that time slot. Doing this right when you find out your schedule will help you from disappointing people if you have to back out of plans to study.

5. Take a Break- Find a perfect stopping place (new chapter, new subject, etc.) Get up, stretch, write down anything else that is on your mind, get a snack and go back to it. Stay away from Social Media and sites like Pinterest as time seems to get lost...quickly! I recommend a 15 minute break for every two hours as anything more you lose interest in studying and anything less and you will feel like it was not enough!

6. Create Your Perfect Study Area - Make sure you select an area free from distractions and temptations. Select a comfortable but practical location to study. Stay away from computers (when not needed) as well as cell phones!

7. Prepare For Your Study Session - Have all of your items ready to go. Like to drink OJ at 8? Make sure that you have it ready for when you sit down at 7:30. Getting up right away or looking something can lead to distractions!

8. Get Sleep & Eat Healthy - You might be tempted to pull an all-nighter, but if you do, you will be hurting your chances of getting a good grade.  Get a full 8 hours of sleep, wake up on time and have breakfast so your brain is in great shape for your test.

I hope all this helps!

GOOD LUCK THIS YEAR! May it be your best school (& volleyball)  year YET!

Have a great day!

Sincerely,

Lauren Sands
